RNLI Fundraising trip
Round the Coastline of Britain

Trip Roundup

Well, we made it.

Lochinver Lifeboat

4,480 miles mainly on B roads and minor A roads following the coastline of Britain as closely as possible.

Off to find the sea

159 RNLI stations visited (out of a possible 163)

Where has the water gone

16 days in the saddle (as predicted),
One rear tyre each, about £250 in fuel each.
No car / bike interfaces and lots of fun.
Lots and lots of fun.

And thanks to all you guys, it look like we have raised nearly £4,000 for the RNLI "Train a Hero" crewmember training program.

Biking country at its best

Due to the distance covered we spent a lot of time in the saddle, sometime up to 14 hours a day, but apart from getting sore bums, near every mile was a pleasure to ride.

Overall the weather was kind to us. We often had strong winds to deal with and a couple of very cold days when we went up the east coast of Scotland, but it did not rain too much and when it did, it seemed to stop each time we reached an RNLI station and stopped for photographs.

Catseyes would be handy in the fog.

Some of the roads we took were rather narrow, which brought down our average speed quite a bit. Most were minor A roads and B roads, with just a few faster roads and a couple of sections on motorways.

Dodging the waves in Essex

Now and again we blew the plot entirely and went where no bike has been before.

Some of the Penlee boys

All the RNLI crewmembers we met were just brilliant guys. Whenever they saw us, they were up for chat and offering a cup of tea. If we had stopped for them all, the trip would have taken 2 months.

A BIG thanks to:

We met lots of great people on the trip and would especially like to thank the guys that gave us a bed for the night (Fausto, Farmer Palmer aka Chris Neil, Bustupbiker and Chris's Nan).

Bustupbiker as also extremely helpfull in getting us new rear tyres fitted in North Wales. TimC aka Sid and Reggie the Cameraman were a great help in directing us to Mottorad Central in Glasgow where I was kitted out with a new pair of Contour Plus Goretex boots and a new Autocom GPS audio lead.

Trip Sponsors

The trip cost us a fair bit of money and would have been a lot more expensive without the help we were given by:-

North Oxford BMW (Top people and great mechanics)
BMW Press Services (Please, please let me keep the Navigator II GPS)
Woods Wines, Nettlebed (The best wines by the box full)
The Unicorn pub, Kingwood Common. (Brakespears beer and Steve's wit)

Home is where the beer is

Now to finish the day by day reports.
